Every year Brook runs the UK’s leading, policy-led sexual health conference and awards. This event is designed to bring together professionals from local and national government, education, health, social services, the police and the voluntary sector to debate approaches to promoting safe sex and to strengthen knowledge and skills, so that all professionals have the confidence to protect young people and their rights. The awards are an opportunity to celebrate the fantastic work professional are doing all over the UK to support young people.

Brook Annual Sexual Health Conference and Awards 2009

Brook’s conference and awards took place on Thursday 5 March at The Brit Oval Conference Centre, London. The theme for the conference was Safeguarding young people’s right to confidentiality: the law and best practice.

The conference was chaired by Polly Toynbee, Journalist and writer, and keynote speakers included:

Shami Chakrabarti, Director, Liberty
Anne Milton MP, Nurse and Shadow Minister for Health
Andrea Duncan, Programme Manager – Sexual Health and HIV, Department of Health
Simon Blake, Chief Executive, Brook

The presentation of The Brook Awards 2009 took place after the conference and celebrated the outstanding work young people and professionals are doing to improve the lives of young people all over the UK.

Award winners are:

  • UK sexual health professional of the year – Mark Withers, Boys and Young Men’s Development Worker, Somerset County Council
  • UK sexual health project of the yearYoung Leaders, Terrence Higgins Trust
  • Young person of the year – Antony Jones, Staffordshire Youth Service
  • Brook employee of the year – Jackie Boath, Brook East of England
  • Brook innovation of the year – Brook in Manchester, HIV/Syphilis Rapid Testing Service
  • Special achievement award – UK Youth Parliament
