The Future

Brook is still the leading UK provider of sexual health advice and contraception to young people. The sexual health climate has changed dramatically since 1964; contraception is free, abortion legal, illegitimacy abolished and censorship of sex in the media relaxed. However, as sexually transmitted infections are on the increase, particularly among under 25s, and the UK has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Western Europe, there is still much work to be done.

While popular culture bombards young people with references to sex, sex education in schools too often fails to give young people the facts on relationships, contraception and sexually transmitted infections. Brook therefore continues to promote better access to sex and relationships education through its innovative outreach and peer education work in schools and youth clubs, supported by its work developing and promoting publications and resources for teachers and other professionals working with young people.

Today, Brook’s 17 Centres run sessions in 40 different locations, offering a range of services from contraceptive advice and counselling to screening for sexually transmitted infections. With over 1.4 million visits since it opened its doors to young people in 1964, Brook continues to widen access to confidential sexual health services, always putting the needs of young people first.
Brook is a registered charity and relies heavily on grants and donations to support its work.
