Boys

What happens in puberty?

Boys' bodies start to change during puberty, any time between the ages of 10 and 18. Sexual development usually begins around 13 and 14. This is what happens:

  • the voice deepens

  • you grow taller

  • your muscles develop and your chest gets broader

  • your genitals (penis and testicles) grow larger

  • your nipples can become sensitive for a short time and may have some swelling

  • hair grows under your arms, on your legs, chest, genitals and face (upper lip and chin) - you need to start shaving

  • you may get spots

  • the sweat glands are more active under your arms and between your legs

  • your penis may seem to have a mind of its own. Erections happen when you are sexually excited and often even when you aren't. During an erection the penis grows stiff, longer and wider and sticks outwards and upwards.

  • you may have "wet dreams". This is when you lose semen (which is wet and mixed with sperm) from your penis during sleep without knowing.

How long will this take?

Not everyone develops at the same speed nor in the same order. Body changes take place over several years and changes usually carry on into the late teens or early twenties.

What can I do about spots?

Everyone gets spots at some time. They can be helped by keeping skin clean, not touching/picking them, using anti-acne cream or lotion. In severe cases, your family doctor (GP) may be able to help.

Feelings

It's not just your body that changes. Feelings also change and go up and down. Friendships matter more as boys grow up. It can be important to belong to a group of friends. It can be important to have close friendships too, with boys or girls.

Am I normal?

It is important to remember that everyone develops differently. The following are all perfectly normal and nothing to worry about:

  • the penis should hang slightly to one side

  • one testicle should be higher than the other

  • swelling under the nipple is common

  • erections can come and go at embarrassing moments

  • penises vary in size and shape (adult penis size is usually 6cm to 10cm long when soft and 12cm to 19cm long when hard)

What to do if you're worried

Puberty can be a difficult time. It may help to talk about worries and feelings to parents, a teacher or youth worker. Other organisations also have helplines and useful websites if you would prefer not to speak to someone you know.
