There are six categories of award.

  1. UK sexual health professional of the year 
  2. UK young person sexual health project of the year 
  3. UK adult sexual health service/project of the year 
  4. JLS young person of the year 
  5. Pamela Sheridan Innovation in SRE Award
  6. Rosemary Goodchild Award for excellence in sexual health journalism 

UK sexual health professional of the year

This person will have displayed at least three of the following five qualities:

  • Imaginative approaches to their work
  • Impressive levels of commitment to their work
  • Evidence of having had an unprecedented impact on the lives of young people
  • An excellent team player
  • Outstanding leadership qualities.

UK young person sexual health project of the year

This project/initiative is showing evidence of at least two of the following three criteria:

  • A demonstrable impact on the sexual health of vulnerable young people
  • Innovative and creative approaches to support behavioural change in young people
  • The capacity and flexibility to be rolled out across the sexual health sector.

UK adult sexual health service/project of the year

This service/project is showing evidence of at least two of the following three criteria:

  • A demonstrable impact on the sexual health of adults
  • Innovative and creative approaches to support behavioural change in adults
  • The capacity and flexibility to be rolled out across the sexual health sector.

JLS young person of the year

This young person will be under 25 and will have displayed at least three of the following five qualities:

  • Exceptional personal development
  • Outstanding dedication to their work
  • Imaginative approaches to their work
  • A positive role model for their peers
  • Evidence of having made a positive contribution to the lives of vulnerable young people.

Pamela Sheridan Innovation in SRE Award

Pamela Sheridan (1911-1994) had a lifelong involvement in family planning and was an early sex education pioneer. Her family established this award in her memory. This award recognises good practice in sex and relationships education (SRE) within a school setting. The winner receives £1,000 worth of FPA resources kindly sponsored by the Sheridan family.

Applications should meet these criteria:

Clear evidence the content of the programme and the approaches used.

  • Evidence of the impact of the programme on participants.
  • If the project uses peer education it is important that both the impact on peer educators AND participants is evidenced.
  • If your project produced resources (e.g. leaflet, pack, etc) judges will consider a maximum of two examples.
  • If you are an agency delivering SRE in schools you should demonstrate how your work complements wider PSHE/SRE delivered in the school.
  • Evidence of a clear plan for future continuation and sustainability.

Rosemary Goodchild Award for excellence in sexual health journalism

The Rosemary Goodchild Award was established by the family of former FPA Press Officer, Rosemary Goodchild, who died of ovarian cancer in 1988. The annual award is designed to celebrate the best writing about sexual health issues that was published in the previous year. The winner receives a £500 prize kindly sponsored by the Goodchild family.

The award is open to all national and regional press, consumer magazines and professional journals. Commissioned articles appearing as online content on UK websites only are also acceptable. All articles submitted must have been published between January 1 and December 31 2011.

Articles should meet these criteria:

  • It must be primarily about a sexual health issue. This could include sex and relationships education, sexual health services, sexually transmitted infections, sexuality and gender, sex and the law, pregnancy, abortion or contraception.
  • It must be factually correct.
  • It must be medically sound.
  • It should help encourage positive changes in people's behaviour.
