Talking it through

There are lots of things about sex and relationships that you may want to talk about to someone like your parents, a teacher or someone else you trust.

But it's not always easy to start a conversation with someone, especially if you're worried they might be shocked, upset or even angry by what you're telling them.

Have a think about how they might react before you speak to them. Try putting yourself in their shoes - are they concerned or embarrassed, or are they worried that they won't be able to help you? Try to understand what they will be going through and give them time to accept what you are saying to them.

If you do have to deal with someone feeling angry, you may need to give yourself, and the other person, a bit of a 'time out'. Time to calm down and work out what to do next. You may need to be strong to stop coming back with angry responses yourself.

Lots of adults find it difficult to talk about sex or relationships, and if you need their help you may need to be sensitive to that. They may have a lack of knowledge and understanding, and you're going to have to deal with this.

Remember, the adults around you usually just want to keep you safe and happy. Help them understand that the best for you might be different to how they planned it, but ultimately right for you.

If you need help. Pick up the phone call Ask Brook on 0808 802 1234. We can help advise you the best way to introduce your subject and deal with the reactions. We won't judge you. And most importantly we won't tell anyone.
