Yasmin, talks about what it was like to visit Brook Bristol during her time at university in the late 2010s.
Myself and my best friend attended University of Bristol and used the Brook under 19s walk in clinic at The Station on multiple occasions.
I don’t think there were any other testing clinics in the area where you could drop in as you wanted. It was reassuring to know Brook had daily drop ins, especially as the nurses there always made the experience as pleasant as it can be.
They were open, non judgemental and understanding about the realities of student life.
I never felt like I had to hide or be ashamed of anything.
One time I had to go to an emergency out of hours GP for a vaginal health related issue, and I had a terrible experience with the GP, who was judgemental and made me upset.
The next day I went to the Brook clinic, and the nurse there made me feel a lot better and reassured me that what was happening was normal.
Brook made me feel comfortable and confident to own my sexual health, and to talk about it without shame or stigma, which is so important for girls of that age.
Please never stop your drop in clinics!
Help us fight stigma
We continue to fight for the right of everyone to access sexual health and wellbeing services that are free of judgement.
This year, millions of people in the UK will experience attacks on their sexual and reproductive rights; attacks that are shaped by, and reinforce, stigma.
Can you donate to help us fight back?
