Brook’s 2024 EASY report found that 47% of young people were not satisfied with the information provided about potential side effects in their most recent discussion with a health care professional and 56% described their recent conversations with a professional about LARC as negative due to inadequate or incorrect information, feeling a lack of autonomy and having insufficient time. While medical professionals such as doctors and nurses are seen as reliable sources of contraception information, some people are sceptical of them, especially when it comes to hormonal contraception. When choosing a method of contraception having a good first interaction with healthcare professionals can increase levels of trust and increase likelihood of returning for more information. This shows how important it is to develop co-designed resources to support healthcare professionals in providing comprehensive consultations. Brook’s 2024 research shows that social media, chats with partners, and friends are key sources of contraception information.Social media and discussions with friends and family can be helpful in understanding experiences with contraception. People find trust and comfort in hearing other’s experiences because they provide a real life perspective. This is often left out in other sources of information like medical professionals and medical websites. While social media and talking with friends and family can be helpful and relatable, it can be hard to tell how accurate and reliable the information is, so it’s important to use critical thinking when navigating sources of information and consider the role those sources play in contraception decision making.
