Want some top tips on how to flirt with a disabled person? @charlottefaragher, co-founder of Desirably Different, gave us her top 6 tips for respectfully flirting with or attempting to have a romance-tinged conversation with a person who has a noticeable physical disability. Charlotte Faragher is a 30 year old disability advocate based in the North West of England. As a result of being born 14 weeks prematurely she has quadraplegic cerebral palsy and is a permanent wheelchair user. She is co-founder of Desirably Different, a UK based initiative that aims to use the arts, creativity, discussion, and the human voice to redefine people who are deemed as different in society. Charlotte is fiercely passionate about utilising the arts and human discussion to further explore issues raised on Desirably Different.

If you have a live in personal assistant (PA), you might feel awkward about having sex or have some questions about logistics!

It's understandable to feel nervous about speaking to a PA about having a date over - you may feel uncomfortable having to tell them, or feel awkward that they are in the next room if you decide to have sex. But it's important to remember that everyone has the right to a healthy and happy sex life, whatever that means to them. Your support staff are there to help you and you don't need to apologise for expressing your needs.

What to say?
It may feel difficult to be open with a PA, as it can feel like you're making yourself emotionally vulnerable. But you can say as much or as little as you want to, whilst keeping yourself safe. You could say something like: ‘I want this to happen and I’d love for you to make it easier for me as I’m embarrassed'.

If you have multiple support staff and feel you have a better relationship with one of them, try speaking to them about it first. Or arrange a date when they will be in, so you feel most comfortable.

Logistics?
If it's safe for you, your PA could go out for a couple of hours while you have a partner over. If they need to be in the house, ask them to put on the TV or radio! Depending on your mobility needs, your PA could help you get onto the bed. But your partner may also be able to support. This can become sexy in itself… moving you on to the bed, kissing you in between stages…keeping the excitement going. They could also undress you if you need help. This can be as slow or fast as you want – it can all be very tantalising.

📢 The Government is proposing to develop a new

📢 The Government is proposing to develop a new Women’s Health Strategy for England because women have a longer life expectancy than men but they are spending more of their lives ill or living with disabilities. 📢

The Government would like to understand more about conditions that only affect women, but also about conditions that affect everyone, but may affect women differently than men.

A new women’s health strategy aims to:

1. Place women’s voice at the centre of their health and care
2. Improve the quality and accessibility of information and education on women’s health
3. Ensure the health and care system understands and is responsive to women’s health and care needs across the life course
4. Maximise women’s health in the workplace
5. Ensure research, evidence and data support improvements in women’s health
6. Understand and respond to the impacts of COVID-19 on women’s health

Please help in the development of this strategy by completing the public survey which will increase the government’s understanding of women’s experiences of health and the health care system.

The survey asks questions for individuals to answer about their experience of a range of healthcare services. Your input could help to identify current problems and areas for improvement.

Anyone can submit evidence to this whether or not they are a woman.

As many of the questions are about healthcare issues related to the female reproductive system we would encourage trans men to answer the questions that are relevant to their experience. There is an opportunity at the start of the survey to describe your gender identity.

Disabled people exist on the same spectrum that no

Disabled people exist on the same spectrum that non-disabled people do. They can love sex, be asexual, be heterosexual, be LGBTQ+, love all kinds of touch, only like certain types of touch etc.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer when talking about sex and disability. One of the most important things to remember is that everyone's relationship with sex and sexuality is unique.
