How can Brook Southend help me?

At Brook Southend, we’re here to help you with all aspects of your sexual health and wellbeing.

Online services

Brook Southend offers various online services in partnership with SH:24. For in person services, contact the Brook Southend clinic to make an appointment.

Home STI test kits

Brook Southend offers free sexual health screening for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV, and offers and treatment for people of all ages.

Residents aged 16+ in Southend-on-sea can also now order a free postal STI test from SH:24, which can test for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV and syphilis.

Brook recommends testing two weeks after unprotected sex (sex without a condom) to ensure an accurate result. For HIV testing, you need to wait 6 weeks to take a test in order to get the most accurate result.

These postal test kits are for people who have no symptoms (are asymptomatic). If you have any symptoms, please contact Brook Southend on 0330 135 5916.

How does it work?
  1. A quick, confidential assessment will recommend the most appropriate kit for you, which can include tests for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV and syphilis.
  2. Tests arrive the next working day in a plain envelope, sent via first class post. The kits include clear instructions to help you take your own samples at home and a freepost envelope to return your samples. Results will be sent to you within 3 days.
  3. You can do the test at home. Testing is simple and non-invasive: either a urine test or a vaginal swab that you complete yourself.
  4. Once you have done your test, you can send it back in the freepost envelope provided.
  5. The results are then sent to you confidentially via your chosen method of communication, usually around 3 days after you have returned the test. You will either receive a text message to say results are negative or a text message asking you to contact the clinic to discuss the results.
  6. If your test comes back positive, we will help you access treatment via our online service (SH:24), our clinic in Southend or another service. We can also help you notify your partner(s).

Testing and treatment for genital warts and herpes

If you think you might have genital warts or genital herpes, we can offer online diagnosis and treatment by post, without you needing to visit a clinic. The service is provided by SH:24, and uses photo diagnosis.

  1. First, they will ask you about your symptoms and health history.
  2. They will then ask you to upload some photos of your symptoms in order to confirm diagnosis.
  3. Before prescribing home treatment, a clinician may call you to check some details.
  4. They will send treatment by first class Royal Mail. The package will fit through your letterbox, and you will not need to sign for it. If treatment at home is not suitable for you, they will refer you to a local clinic or offer you advice on how to manage your symptoms.
  5. Follow up support is available via text and phone.

Repeat contraception and emergency contraception

If you are 16+ and live in Southend-on-sea, you can order the pill online from SH:24 for free and receive it directly to your home or another location of your choice. You can can also order an extended range of contraception options from SH:24, including the ringpatch and self-injectable.

Once an SH:24 clinician has approved your prescription, they will post your contraception out the same day (if you order before 2pm), or the next working day (if you order after 2pm). They will send it in discreet packaging by 1st class Royal Mail. You will not have to be in or sign for the package – it will fit through your letter box.

If you are a Southend-on-sea resident aged 16+, you can also order the emergency hormonal contraception (the “morning after pill”) online from SH:24 and receive it directly to your home or another location of your choice.
