Brook’s PSHE curriculum

Combining decades of experience supporting young people with their sexual health and wellbeing with our extensive knowledge of the requirements for mandatory Relationships and Sex Education, we have developed a full PSHE curriculum for key stages 1-5.

At Brook, we are committed to promoting positive health and wellbeing among young people and our PSHE curriculum is an integral part of that.

By using the curriculum, you will be meeting all Ofsted statutory guidance for mandatory relationships and sex (RSE) education, and all PSHE Association principals and outcomes.

The curriculum is CBT-based and trauma-informed throughout.

Why choose Brook?

Brook aims to establish a partnership with you, where purchasing the PSHE curriculum serves as the initial step, enabling us to collaborate in delivering RSE so that’s aligned with your goals as well as what young people have told us they want to learn about.

Our approach to relationships and sex education is inclusive and non-judgmental, and we aim to provide young people with the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about their relationships and sexual health.

In 2021-22, Brook:

  • supported over 128,000 young people in clinical and education services
  • upskilled over 8,200 professionals through our face-to-face RSE training
  • Had over 3.2 million website views
  • Reached over 23,000 users on our online learning platform Brook Learn

We recognise the importance of mental health and wellbeing, and our PSHE curriculum includes topics such as emotional resilience, stress management, and self-care.

Brook’s PSHE curriculum also aims to equip young people with the skills they need to navigate the challenges of modern life, including drug and alcohol education and financial education.

We combine our robust quality assurance processes, with our longstanding commitment to effective safeguarding and vast experience of delivering leading frontline services into an accessible digital content.

Supporting every young person

This curriculum will help your staff challenge the stigma that pervades many aspects of relationships and sex education. As a fully differentiated resource it has been designed to support every young person in every education session.

As experts in teaching young people, we have summarised content of subject matter experts to be more easily digestible by young people.

Personal touch based on experience. We create varied content that can be applicable to a variety.

We believe that our PSHE curriculum is an important part of our commitment to supporting young people to lead happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives. We work closely with schools and other organisations to deliver the curriculum, and we are committed to ensuring that it is accessible to all young people.

What does Brook’s curriculum include?

The curriculum covers subjects we know young people want to learn about, based around 3 core themes

  • Health and Wellbeing: puberty, mental health, keeping active, dental care and healthy eating.
  • Relationships: respectful and healthy relationships (both on and offline), kindness and sex education.
  • Living in the Wider World: career planning, financial literacy and exploring our rights and responsibilities.

The curriculum is hosted on our online learning platform Brook Learn. Once registered, staff have access to free courses to support the delivery of the curriculum.

Our curriculum is engaging, interactive, and inclusive, and we use a variety of teaching methods and resources to ensure that all young people can access and benefit from the curriculum.

Suggested lessons include objectives and a cover sheet as minimum, with PowerPoint slides, plans, resources and worksheets for many lessons too.

Key messages will be introduced, reinforced, and built upon year on year at appropriate stages, through a spiral curriculum.  A spiral curriculum means teaching topics that are timely, relevant and age appropriate, revisiting core themes each year to gradually build up the knowledge young people need to make healthy choices.

Brook believes that RSE must reflect young people’s expressed needs.

Young people have an important role in working with schools to decide how RSE education should be provided, what should be covered and when. Our content has been co-created with a diverse range of young people led by Brook’s award-winning participation team

Our curriculum therefore leaves room for flexibility in delivery. Cover sheets, lesson plans and resources are a starting point for delivering lessons that maximise the benefits of good RSE.

Are there resources to help students with additional learning needs?

We have developed a full differentiation guide so that the resources can be delivered to young people with additional needs. These can be found in the cover sheets and offer a different way of delivering (or things to think about) when delivering to learners with additional needs such as SEND or young people who do not speak English as a first language.
