About education and training at Brook

For over 55 years, Brook has been at the forefront of supporting, educating and empowering young people to make safe and informed decisions about their sexual health and wellbeing.

In 2021-22 we supported over 128,000 young people in clinical and education services.

Brook works nationwide to make sure education, clinical provision, law, policy and practice are aligned with what young people tell us they want and need.

We have consistently advocated for better personal, social, relationships and sex education, contributing to the consultation and development of the new guidance for schools.

Partnering with Brook means that you will benefit from five decades worth of experience in meeting young peoples’ needs. You can be confident that your young people will receive holistic, evidence-based education about sex, relationships and wellbeing that enables them to build and nurture positive relationships, understand and care for their bodies, and identify when they need help and support.

Our approach to safe and inclusive education

We firmly believe that effective RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) must be relevant and appropriate to the lives of children and young people, regardless of their family background, ethnicity or religion. It should be introduced, reinforced and built upon year on year at developmentally appropriate stages; delivered by staff who feel knowledgeable, confident and supported.

Our aim is to help you meet the needs of your children and young people in the practicalities of your setting, helping you identify their specific needs and encouraging your professional curiosity.

Every teacher should be upskilled to provide holistic support to young people and should be equipped to speak to young people confidently about their health and wellbeing, with access to factually accurate, rights based and high-quality continued professional development and resources.

Every school should be supported with a quality framework and processes. These should align policy, people and practice, curriculum and students in such a way that meaningful provision is established.

All of our education sessions, resources and professionals training undergo rigorous quality assurance to make sure that they not only meet the requirements for mandatory RSE, but that they are up-to-date, clinically-informed, inclusive and responsive.

If you choose to partner with Brook, you can feel assured that we have the best interests of your young people at heart.

Our expertise

Delivery

Our expert facilitators know how to make the most of the time they have with you or your young people and will work with you to make sure your key objectives are met. Whether online or in-person, the aim is to make sessions interactive and engaging; this is why we recommend a maximum number of participants for each session.

They will always set a safe space – known as a Brook space – at the beginning of a session, creating an open and non-judgmental space in which to learn. They are skilled in answering challenging questions, in an appropriate and supportive way, and will provide plenty of opportunity for guided discussion, reflection and peer-to-peer learning where appropriate.

Every session we run is evaluated and we encourage you to provide feedback to help us further improve or identify more topics that would benefit you or your young people.

Safeguarding

The safety of the young people we work with is paramount.

All Brook experts are DBS-checked and have received extensive safeguarding training. If we are visiting your school, we will work with you beforehand to understand your safeguarding policies and procedures.

We also build safeguarding best practice into our training for professionals, helping you to feel more confident in your own safeguarding practice and identify where there might be room for improvement within your organisation’s existing processes.

Policy and Advocacy

Young people tell us that they want a society that recognises their right to healthy relationships and open conversations about sex and sexuality. Brook works nationwide to champion their campaign, challenge stigma, shift attitudes and effect meaningful change.

During 2018/19, we actively contributed to the consultation and development of the new RSE guidance for schools. We are committed to ensuring that the legislation is improved and that everyone is effectively supported to deliver the kind of quality RSE that young people have consistently told us they want and need.

Clinical knowledge

In the year it launched, over 500 women visited the first Brook clinic in London. Since then, Brook has continued to deliver essential frontline services, supporting over 1.3 million young people through our face-to-face and online services on 2020/21.

The extensive clinical expertise from our frontline delivery teams is incorporated in our education offer, ensuring all the most up-to-date, relevant and responsive resources and guidance.

FAQs

Who are Brook educators and trainers?

Our training for professionals and education sessions are both delivered by our Brook Specialists who work around the UK to a high standard to ensure you get the most out of each session.

Brook Specialists are experienced facilitators and RSE experts. Our training programme for the role ensures the same high standard and quality-assured sessions throughout our locations. To ensure the safety of young people, all Specialists have been DBS checked and trained in safeguarding. As with all Brook staff, Specialists sign a “Code of Conduct” which details how they should conduct themselves and work in line with Brook’s position statements.

What are the advantages of having an external educator deliver a session?

There are several reasons why bringing in an external educator from Brook can lead to a more impactful and meaningful lesson:

  • Students are more likely to pay greater attention and be more involved and engaged. This can help particularly with problematic classes.
  • Our Brook educators are trained to deal with difficult questions in an age-appropriate way
  • Students may be more hesitant to ask certain questions with their usual teacher delivering the class. For all our workshops we create a safe space and have great engagement from students who don’t normally participate in lessons.
  • Brook educators are trained on how to deliver more challenging subjects in an inclusive and safe way that follows RSE guidelines. This may be particularly important if your school is lacking support with its RSE delivery, whether that’s internally or externally from parents and carers.
What makes Brook’s RSE lessons different?

Brook’s RSE lessons are developed using insights from young people, cutting-edge research, health models and clinical practice. Each lesson is comprehensive, engaging, trauma-informed and tackles important issues around the topic.

Our Brook educators create a confidential, safe space for every lesson which allows young people the chance to discuss and ask any questions they might have.
