Trans, non-binary and gender questioning young people are living in complicated times, with a public discourse that doesn’t always support them to thrive.
Evidence underlines the harm this does. Rates of bullying, poor mental health, self-harm and suicide are significantly higher than in cisgender young people.
For any young person to thrive, they need the adults around them to be understanding, compassionate and supportive. This can play a vital role not only in them thriving – but even just surviving.
Like you, our focus is always how we can provide the best support to a young person.
This is why Brook and Gendered Intelligence have teamed up to produce this course for schools and educators.
It will support you to deliver high quality RSE on gender diversity in a way that aligns with the current RSHE guidance and the Equality Act 2010. It will also give you the confidence to better support trans young people at your school, improving their life chances and educational attainment.
This course is recommended for anyone involved in RSE planning and delivery in a school or education setting.
It will help you to deliver comprehensive, effective and inclusive lessons that support and safeguard young people, as well as allow you to reflect on your own personal values as an educator.
Gender Diversity is split into four modules:
Understand terminology around sex, gender and being trans, the different types of transitioning and the basics of UK laws in relation to trans people.
Learn more about the experiences of trans young people and the disadvantages they might face, as well as understanding the importance of learning more about gender diversity in schools and how an inclusive approach benefits all learners.
Spend some time considering interactions with trans people; exploring how we can use the right language and be a trans ally.
Learn about the language trans people use to describe themselves, how you can be inclusive in your use of language and how to manage mistakes in your interactions.
Find out about the statutory RSHE guidance for England and how to embed gender through a holistic, age and stage appropriate spiral RSE curriculum.
Includes downloadable resources to support your teaching practice year-by-year and equip young people to navigate a diverse world with compassion and understanding, of themselves and others.
Explore the laws and guidance relevant to supporting trans, non-binary and gender questioning young people. Find out how to create an inclusive, open and supportive environment for young people through a whole school approach and how to effectively support and signpost students to useful organisations.
The course takes approximately 3 hours to complete (45 minutes per module). You do not need to complete all the modules in one go – your progress is saved so you can returned to them later.
Once you have finished the course and completed the post-course survey, you will receive a certificate to add to your records as proof of your commitment to delivering inclusive RSE.
You will have unlimited access to the course for two years to learn when it suits you best. We’ll update the course with any updates if government guidance changes. These updates will be available for free and you’ll be notified of any new content.
