Gender Diversity Online Course

What do I do if a pupil asks everyone to use different pronouns? How can we make sure RSE is inclusive of trans and non-binary young people? Why is it so important to be inclusive of trans young people? What language should we be using in school around gender? How can we foster a safe, inclusive school for everyone?

This online course will support you and your school to understand gender and gender diversity and learn how to teach gender, support trans young people and be an ally.

Trans, non-binary and gender questioning young people are living in complicated times with rates of bullying, poor mental health, self-harm and suicide significantly higher than in cisgender young people. Whether you teach RSE or not, as a teacher you can play a key role in supporting transgender, non-binary and gender questioning young people.

Faced with this current situation, Brook and Gendered Intelligence have teamed up to produce this new online course, Gender Diversity. With the expertise, tips, and guidance included in this course, you can feel confident understanding how you, your staff/colleagues and school can help trans young people to not just survive but to thrive.

What can I gain from this course?

Yes. We’ve built this course with the aim of providing teachers with the best way to support young people. A lot of the laws referenced, like the Equality Act and the Human Rights Act, are UK wide-legislation.

If you work in Scotland you may want to complete the course alongside the Scottish Government’s guidance on transgender young people at school. The Welsh Government are due to publish guidance later this year.

Module 3 looks at teaching about gender based on England’s statutory guidance. However, lesson plans cover similar themes to those specified schools in Scotland and Wales.
