Getting regularly tested for STIs is an important part of looking after your sexual health if you are sexually active. STIs often don’t have symptoms so the only way to know for sure is to test. Generally, you should get tested every time you have sex with someone new, every three months or every year if you’re in an exclusive relationship.

It can take two weeks for chlamydia and gonorrhoea to show up on STI tests after unprotected sex (sex without a condom or barrier method) so it’s best to wait two weeks from exposure before testing.

How do I test for an STI?

If you have symptoms, do not order a home test kit – you need to visit your nearest sexual health clinic.

If you don’t have symptoms of an STI, you can come to our drop-in sessions to pick up a testing kit to complete at home and send back in the post. These kits test for gonorrhoea and chlamydia through a vaginal swab or urine test.

If you’re aged 16+ you can order a test online if you have no symptoms through Newcastle Sexual Health. The test comes in plain packaging to your address, you complete it at home and send it back in the post.
