Brook statement in support of the PSHE Bill

Ahead of the debate on Caroline Lucas MP's Bill on PSHE (personal, social, health and economic) education, to be debated in Parliament on Wednesday 15 July, Brook's Interim Chief Executive Jules Hillier said:

"We know that PSHE education is hugely beneficial to young people, helping them to stay safe and healthy, and to negotiate the challenges of growing up. We also know that too many young people don't get a high enough standard of PSHE education, which is why the subject needs statutory status.

"Parents and carers, teachers, business leaders, and young people themselves all want more guidance and information about the topics covered by PSHE education, and it's time for the government to listen, and act."

The Commons Education Select Committee's report on sex and relationships education and PSHE education, Life Lessons, concluded that the subject should be statutory, and that the Department for Education should formally issue and endorse the SRE Supplementary Advice co-produced by Brook, the PSHE Association and the Sex Education Forum.

Update: We're pleased that the PSHE Bill has passed its first Parliamentary hurdle, with 183 MPs voting in favour (44 voted against it). The Bill is due to have its second reading on 22 January 2016.
